Is puppy chow an American thing?

Yes, indeed, Puppy Chow is an American invention, and it has nothing to do with actual puppies, we promise! This tasty treat has been a staple at American gatherings for decades. Itโ€™s known by different names across the United States, with some calling it Muddy Buddies, Monkey Munch, or Reindeer Chow (especially during Christmas). Whatever you call it, the delicious combination of cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar remains a beloved treat at parties, sleepovers, and holiday gatherings.

What is Halloween puppy chow made of?

Our Halloween version of this classic snack takes a typical puppy chow and adds some Halloween candy favorites. Youโ€™ll need:

    • Rice Chex cereal
    • Semisweet chocolate chips
    • Creamy peanut butter
    • Unsalted butter
    • Vanilla extract
    • Powdered sugar
    • Reeseโ€™s Pieces
    • Candy corn

    Protip: Adjust the sweetness!

We opted for semisweet chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate because you get so much sweetness from the powdered sugar and candy mix-ins! But if you want your Halloween puppy chow to be even sweeter, you can use milk chocolate or even white chocolate chips.

How do you make Halloween puppy chow?

If you can stir and shake, you can make Halloween puppy chow!

    1. Pour the cereal into a large bowl. You want extra space in the bowl so you have room to mix.
    2. Melt the chocolate chips into the butter and peanut butter. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    3. Pour the chocolate over the cereal and stir until all the cereal pieces are coated.
    4. Pour the cereal into a gallon zip-top bag and add the powdered sugar. Seal and shake the bag until you can no longer see any wet chocolate spots.
    5. Pour the puppy chow onto a lined baking sheet and stir in the candy. Cool completely.

    Protip: Customize it!

We chose Reeseโ€™s Pieces and candy corn for our candy mix-ins, but you can use whatever small candies you want. Try candy eyes, mini marshmallows, M&Ms, or candy pumpkins!

How long does puppy chow last?

One of the fantastic things about puppy chow is its shelf life. When stored in an airtight container, it can last for up to two weeks at room temperature. Just make sure itโ€™s in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight.

    Ingredients

    • 7 cups Rice Chex Cereal
    • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
    • 1/4 cup butter
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 cup Reeseโ€™s Pieces
    • 1 cup candy corn

    Instructions

    1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper and set aside.
    2. Place cereal in a large mixing bowl.
    3. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 1 minute, and stir to combine until completely melted. You can also do this in a double broiler over low heat on the stove.
    4. Stir in the vanilla extract until smooth.
    5. Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal and stir to coat.
    6. Put the cereal mixture and powdered sugar in a gallon-size zip-top bag.
    7. Seal bag and shake, shake, shake to coat all the cereal with the sugar. Pour mixture onto the prepared baking sheet.
    8. Sprinkle the Reeseโ€™s Pieces and candy corn over the puppy chow, stirring gently to mix.
    9. Allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

    Notes

    • Feel free to play with the mix-ins: mini peanut butter cups, Halloween-colored M&Ms, candy eyeballsโ€”the possibilities are endless!
    • We prefer semisweet chocolate chips in this recipe because there is so much sweetness added from the other ingredients, but if milk chocolate is your jam, thatโ€™ll work, too! Or even try white chocolate chips if you arenโ€™t a chocolate lover.
    • You can make this dairy-free by using vegan margarine (weโ€™ve used Earth Balance sticks in this recipe before with great results) and leaving out the Reeseโ€™s Pieces.
    • This recipe differs from what youโ€™ll find on the Chex box. We tested it a number of times and found that there is a more flavorful result with less Chex than the original recipe calls for.
